Deburred all the holes then dimpled just the #19 with a #8 die for the screws. I was still undecided on the method of installed the AD426 rivet... either Dimple or Countersink the W919 strip. After doing some reading i'm going with the NAS1097 shear rivet which is actually the preferred method. Using these rivets i will just need to do some light countersinking of the W919 piece and nothing to the nut-plate! The reason i can do this is because the NAS1097 rivet has a much lower profile head and the W919 is thick enough to allow a relatively small countersink.<br />Test material, notice the smaller head on the bottom left rivet. Also drilled the nut-plates onto the W-919 splice strip that connects the leading edge skin to the fuel tank skin. We also spent some time lightly countersinking(after dimpling) the rear spar on both sides to allow the dimples in the skin to fit better. <br />Over the last couple of days I've spent a couple of hours countersinking the #40 holes on the main spar to accept the skin dimples. Tad and I did all the top skins last week and the wing walk doubler. I finished the bottom inner wing skin last night... the only one left is the main bottom skin. I'll wait for Tad's help on that one.<br />After these skins are dimpled the plan is to prepare the rear spar with dimples and prepare the front spar with countersinks. These will then accept the dimples we just put into the skins and once riveted will lock everything in place. Haven't cut any metal yet, just getting the template cut-out, brackets polished,etc.<br />The actual mount that holds the light will have to be cut, shortened and riveted back together to fit the RV9 model of wing. All the skins on the left wing are matched drilled now. Next was the Tank assembly. This is done mostly off of the wing skeleton except for when it comes to fitting the tank attach brackets. The way Van's wants you to do them seems a bit odd to me but after a lot of double-checking i got them drilled and nut-plates installed. There are two W926a and 926b. They are different lengths and overlap in the middle section of the wing. Kinda confusing at first look because the lengths written and what the plans show are different. I also needed to change the reference line down the middle of them by about a 1/16" or so... this provided better spacing in the ribs. The J-Stringers are done now for the Left Wing so it's on to the bottom Skins now. I've read other builders websites and knew that assembly within the constructed jig is very difficult. I opted to build on the table and work one cleco in at a time, one rib at a time.... it proved to be the best way. Now the Leading edge assembly fits nicely.<br />I cut and deburred the j-stringers for the Left wing and cleaned the edges of both the inboard skin and wing-walk doubler. Vans sent us the wrong size for one of those doublers but within a week i had the new one in my hand. It didn't take too long with both Tad and I working on it. We left the rear spar and i finished that last night. One of them is 25 3/8" and the other is 26". 26" is the correct length. With the pre-punched wings jigs aren't really needed but do make things easier and it's always good to check to ensure there isn't any twist in either of the wings while building.<br />The Right Wing Ribs are at Tad's place now getting their primer coat applied. We left the outboard most rib off as per the instructions.<br />We had a couple of rivets we weren't happy with but they were fairly painless to remove. just time consuming really. <br />We used the 4x gun and reduced the pressure to around 50psi i believe. That gave Tad a bit more control of the impact. anything higher and they seemed to set too fast, either they were under or they would be over with only one hit. <br />The Rear Spar was easy to do with the pneumatic squeezer and only had one that didn't squeeze straight - the very first one we did. It was more from the inability to see the rivet properly but flipping over the wing allowed much better control of it.<br />Oh, one last thing, we ended up drilling out one of the tooling holes just in case we decide to install a AOA device later on in the build. That way it can be shaped a lot smaller to get into those tough places to knock off any rough edges.<br />Works pretty well so far. <br />Anyway, got about half-dozen or so done. While Tad is working on the Right Wing rib prep work and priming the tie-down pieces, I matched drilled all the holes in the Ribs for the left wing to both Front and Rear Spars.<br />It went pretty smoothly and all the holes lined up better than I remember from the last trial-fit. Anyway, that is done now.<br />Need to clean up the holes for the Pitot tube grommets and then drill the Conduit Holes for each rib. I'll probably measure out one and then cleco each one to the master and just match drill it with a smaller drill size. I believe there is about 248 of those. <br />The 'painters tape' is to prevent chips falling between the doubler and the spar. Luckily Tad had a #21 cutter so in the end after trying different methods(using the #30 cutter with nut-plate attached), we settled on using a thick piece of wood cut down to act as a pilot guide for the bit. This method worked really well and i now have the left wing complete now minus the #6 access plate holes. Tad dropped the parts off a few weeks ago after we inventoried everything. We were only missing one small bag of parts which Van's shipped out without any problems.<br />Over the last couple of weeks I have been cleaning up the Ribs and Rear Spars and doublers. It is a lot of repetition but it needs to be done. So while we haven't had many building sessions I've been in the shop every couple of days doing a bit of work. <br /><br />Tad stopped by yesterday night and I showed him the work so far on the wings. Last week Tad and I got the Aluminum edge fastened to the bench and pro-sealed the trailing edge of the rudder. Hopefully this week we'll get the rivets in and see how it looks. Then we'll get the elevators done.<br />I have also spent some time extending the shop area to accomadate the wings. I was thinking of building and closing in my carport but building inside during the cold winter months is much more appealing. Tad and I managed to pretty much finish off the left elevator and it is now ready for the trailing-edge drilling and riveting. We just wanted to be sure there weren't going to be any issues later on. <br />We'll be using the Pro-seal, angle aluminum method so i think that will happen on the next building session. First we'll match drill through the trail-edge, the wedge and then we'll countersink the wedge and dimple the skin. I'm thinking now that getting the dimple dies in there could be tricky.<br /><br />Received the confirmation letter from Van's about the wings. should be here sometime mid-august! We used the pneumatic squeezer but had to modify the tip of our 'no-hole yoke'. it just wouldn't fit nicely past the existing rivets on the spar. We had to drill out a few rivets as they weren't setting nice and straight. After the modification to the yoke we didn't have any problems. Spent about 2hrs. finishing that off.<br />I continued on with a few rivets on the Horizontal Stabilizer. there are 200 rivets on the rear 'skin to spar' so i setup the squeezer and did about a 100. Our MD-RA inspection went VERY well and he couldn't find any flaws in our workmanship. Not even a bad rivet to drill out and reset:) <br />SO... it's a good feeling to have that done and know that we have the abilities to get working on the next sections without too much concern. We will do the same on the wings and leave them open until the Fuselage is ready for inspection. One was to get the hinge bracket bolted to the spar on the stabilizer and the other was to finish off a couple of tricky rivets on the trail edge of the elevator. We did those witht he 4x gun and back-riveted with a small flat plate centred over the rivet. Worked great.<br />So now we wait to hear from the MD-RA about when we can have it inspected. We riveted the other side of our hinge for the trim-tab on to the elevator and finished off the rivets on the elevator's top side.<br />A couple of small things to do before we book our inspection. Two rivets on the trail-edge of the elevator and install the hinge bearing bracket on the stabilizer and torqued to proper spec.<br />Also called Van's about getting our wing kit on the way. It's 25% down at time of order so i think we'll be doing that in the next week or so. They say it can take 6-8 weeks to get it crated and shipped. We'll have ours shipped to Montana and then drive down to pick it up. First we riveted the control horn and the bottom of the leading edge. We ended up back-riveting those difficult rivets as we don't have a longeron yoke and using the bucking bar and riveting on such a small piece would have proven difficult. In the end it produced some excellent, very consistent rivets. <br />Next was to dimple the end tabs for the CS4-4 rivets and drill, debur and prime the hinge. Getting all prepared before we used proseal to fasten the foam ribs inside. To finally close up the trim tab we used the pneumatic squeezer and some patience to set them. At first we used the hand squeezer but found it difficult to use. We drilled those couple out and reset them with the pneumatic.<br />Then we put the assembled trim tab in the v-block clamps... Tad built the bending break so we could complete the bend of the trim tab itself. This turned out pretty good and we just did a little at a time to make sure not to over do it. After fussing with it for a bit it turned out really good. We were both pretty happy with it. <br />Next was to bend the tab at either ends. We tried it first on a sample piece to gauge the bend on it and decided to sand the bending blocks a little to ease the radius a bit. Tad did the honours of slowly bending the tab down. We continued match drilling the tab and finished off by countersinking the holes where the hinge will go on the spar. After Thursday's work session Tad took the parts home to prime and that is where we started today. Assembled the main skeleton section, minus the rear spar(trim tab) and riveted all the stiffeners to the skin. We also countersunk the rear spar where the hinge will go for the trim tab.<br />So, the next session will be installing the skeleton into the skin of the elevator and then working on the trim tab. <br />We are nearing the end of the pre-inspection work. Last work session left the Right Elevator ready for riveting to the spar and Ribs. We ended up using a small Tungsten bar and that really did a great job. Tad has a pretty good eye for using those bucking bars now so I continued doing the Rivet gun side. It really wasn't as bad as we were anticipating it to be. Just took our time and within an hour it was done. Even manged to buck the "problem rivet" on the counter-weight skin without too much problem.<br />So, it is ready for inspection now and we started on the Left Elevator. Match drilled the shaped stiffeners and then deburred most of the pieces. The stiffeners are dimpled as well. They just wouldn't set straight. So we fussed with that for over an hour i think. So basically we have the Skeleton together and is ready for the skin. We decided to stop there and tackle riveting the skin on a fresh day. We've read and heard it can be tricky to do... or maybe just time consuming as it will be tough to get in there to buck the rivets. We'll see.<br />Of course in Canada we have pre-close inspections so we'll go as far as possible but all trailing edges will be left open. Cutting the stiffeners to size and then match drilling to the Skin. Having two people do this was much easier as the skins for both the top and bottom are one and already formed to shape. We used a bit of tape to assist holding open one side of it then we drilled directly into the board underneath and this held down the opposite side to the table. It worked out pretty well and didn't take too much time at all.<br />Tad also deburred all the edges of the Right skin while I was cutting out the stiffeners and cleaning up one end of them.<br />We also matched-drilled the nut-plate reinforcements E910 on the spar and match drilled the counter-balance skins/ribs. Tad did the Fluting on those ribs and got them nice and straight.<br /><br />Tad has taken the stiffeners to sheer the angle on the one end. Both Tad and I have been pretty busy but that is a good thing because we are raising $$$ for the next part of the project. WINGS! That will be expensive and the way the exchange is looking, it isn't getting better.<br />So, we have most of the Rudder ready for inspection...just have a few rivets to get right near the trailing edge of the top rib. Tad is making us a nice custom bucking bar for that.<br />Folks, you should see Tad's custom tooling he's done already. We had to Dimple a bigger hole for the counter-weight and didn't have one. Tad majically arrived at the next building session with a beautiful dimple die he made at his shop. I was pretty impressed with that and of course it did a perfect dimple! Tad cut and shaped all the stiffeners for the Rudder at his shop and we have match drilled those to the skins. Also, we have assembled the skeleton of the Rudder and fluted, matched drilled those. Next, is deburring the very thin skin and stiffeners and then prime and back-rivet them together. <br />The Rudder is going together great so far. The VS went together fairly quickly...always takes lots of time to match drill, debur, prime,etc. We basically assembled the entire VS in two evening shifts. I don't have the adjustable one so after a few washer settings we gave a shot. At first, we took our time doing them and making sure we have proper shop heads on the rivets. The really nice thing with the squeezer is once you have it set, it provides nice consistent rivets throughout. We drilled out a few(or Tad did) as we didn't get good countersinks and the factory head was slightly high. We just manually did a quick turn of the deburring tool to take it down a bit, then rivet again. Tad was good at getting them out... perfect everytime.<br /><br />We got as far as assembly of the nose ribs in the skin, then clecoed in the spar and ribs. He came back with them perfectly cut out and ready to be fastened to the workbench. We made sure everything was level and then dropped the first skin into the Jig. We managed to get all the nose ribs <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">clekoed</span> in and a few of the ribs. still have to <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4">cleko</span> the skin to the spar and drop in a few more ribs. Too late for the one side. So I made them 4 size and continued on. On the other side of the spar i used the hand dimpling tool and then manually used the speed <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">deburring</span> bit to take just a little more out...testing with a 3 size as I went. It didn't need too much more after dimpling it.<br /><br />So now i have the skins dimpled and 3 of the 4 skin stiffeners riveted on. It's coming together!!<br /><br />I also drilled the trailing edge at the required angle of 84 degrees. We went on the little tour they give and talked airplanes for the entire morning. Joe was able to give us both a ride in the 9a and Tad and I were completely amazed by just about everything that plane has to offer. We did some slow flight, simulated go-arounds with full flaps(amazing climb out) , a couple of wing overs and a real nice short field landing! i was blown away by the range this plane has.
